They compare a light tap with a slightly firmer tap while keeping the instrument the same. They do not strike loudly near anyone's ears. Their notes describe what they saw and heard. The teacher asks them to distinguish loudness from pitch before they explain the result. One observation is a starting point, not a complete theory.
